It’s easy to play any musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself.

Simplicity is the highest goal, achievable when you have overcome all difficulties. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art.

About Matthew C. Wiencke

Pianist | Performer | Music Teacher

Music has always been a major part of my life since I was very young. My father played viola and had a natural talent for music. He could pick up his viola, join a string quartet, and manage quite well. He was a fan of classical piano and we would listen together for hours to records of Beethoven piano sonatas and Bach preludes and fugues, and he would point out details such as how a pianist shaped the end of a certain phrase.

My parents and three siblings and I all sang and played musical instruments: violin, viola, flute, clarinet, trombone, and piano […] READ MORE

Student Testimonials

“Matt is an excellent piano teacher and is also kind and patient with his students. He not only teaches one to play the piano but also teaches a love of music. When COVID hit, I decided that taking piano lessons would help me cope. Being a senior citizen who hadn’t played a piano for at least 30 years, I didn’t have high hopes about what I could do. But with Matt’s encouragement and guidance, I am enjoying learning blues and gospel—both new for me! Matt has been my COVID silver lining.”

“Watching our three children learn to play piano through Matt’s teaching has brought great joy to our lives. Piano lessons over Zoom during the pandemic were a bright spot each week and worked well to provide a valuable continuity of musical learning. Under Matt’s instruction, our children have grown in their ability to play piano, and have gained confidence, poise, and a deeper love of music.  Matt’s knowledge is impressive, and we are excited for what the future holds with his teaching.  For our children specifically, Matt’s patient instruction accompanied by his smile, enthusiasm, and enjoyment in seeing them master a song is what fills their buckets.”

“It is a bit mysterious to me, but my son goes into a lesson and comes out sounding better right away. Matt shares useful feedback, offering skilled technique instruction, and also new ways to think about music. We are grateful to have found Matt.”

” My 11-year-old granddaughter began piano lessons with Matthew six months ago, and since then she has developed many solid skills, including the joy of daily practice! She enjoys Matthew’s supportive mentoring— he makes her feel at ease—and his vast professional experience has helped her broaden her knowledge of music. Not only does he prescribe weekly lessons, but he inspires her by sharing videos of great performances, such as Vladimir Ashkenazy playing Beethoven’s Pathetique!”

“I started with Matt in 2019 with no experience and a brand new digital piano. With Matt’s patient and kind help, I have made great progress. I am now able to play songs I genuinely like and the piano has become a most enjoyable part of my life. I am looking forward to working with Matt for many years to come.”

When I was younger, I used to sit at the piano and play random notes and wondered if I’d ever be able to play the piano. Then I started lessons with Matthew, and at first, it seemed so complicated but after several weeks of lessons, it got easier every day. Thanks to his help I now feel confident and eager to continue learning. He’s a great teacher!”
