It’s easy to play any musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself.
~Johann Sebastian Bach
Humanity Will Overcome
Simplicity is the highest goal, achievable when you have overcome all difficulties. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art.
~Frédéric Chopin
Music has always been a major part of my life since I was very young. My father played viola and had a natural talent for music. He could pick up his viola, join a string quartet, and manage quite well. He was a fan of classical piano and we would listen together for hours to records of Beethoven piano sonatas and Bach preludes and fugues, and he would point out details such as how a pianist shaped the end of a certain phrase.
My parents and three siblings and I all sang and played musical instruments: violin, viola, flute, clarinet, trombone, and piano […] READ MORE

“When you take piano lessons, you can learn some of the most beautiful music ever written. No two pianists play the same piece of music the same way. Through lessons, you learn how to put your own personal stamp on what you create.“

The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between.

“Before my lessons I just thought piano was really cool. But now I know how to play a lot. I like how if you miss a note he kindly lets you know so you can get the song right.”

“Piano lessons with Matt have been the perfect fit for our son. He has always loved music, and now with Matt’s focused guidance he is learning to create music himself and read musical notes. Matt is kind and gentle in his approach, making our son feel comfortable when he makes mistakes and also as though he can ask questions. Matt gives clear directions and tasks that our son can work through on his own in between lessons. He ends his lessons with a sense of accomplishment and new goals to tackle. My husband and I are not musicians in any way, and we love seeing our child grow in this direction due to Matt’s expertise.”

“It is a bit mysterious to me, but my son goes into a lesson and comes out sounding better right away. Matt shares useful feedback, offering skilled technique instruction, and also new ways to think about music. We are grateful to have found Matt.”

” My 11-year-old granddaughter began piano lessons with Matthew six months ago, and since then she has developed many solid skills, including the joy of daily practice! She enjoys Matthew’s supportive mentoring— he makes her feel at ease—and his vast professional experience has helped her broaden her knowledge of music. Not only does he prescribe weekly lessons, but he inspires her by sharing videos of great performances, such as Vladimir Ashkenazy playing Beethoven’s Pathetique!”

“Matt is a great teacher. He is always patient and good-natured. He figures out what I am doing wrong when I fail to do so. And I am making progress. My wife, who plays guitar, overheard one of my lessons with Matt recently and she remarked without prompting that he was a very good teacher.”

“When I was younger, I used to sit at the piano and play random notes and wondered if I’d ever be able to play the piano. Then I started lessons with Matthew, and at first, it seemed so complicated but after several weeks of lessons, it got easier every day. Thanks to his help I now feel confident and eager to continue learning. He’s a great teacher!”
